A LIFE WASTED
‘A Life Wasted’ is a regional story involving two Sikh family friends Kartar Singh and Karam Singh when Punjab burned under the fire of terrorism. Kartar Singh retired as a Civil Engineer and Karam Singh is a former army soldier. The story revolves round Kartar Singh and his passion to collect waste items lying on the road during his routine morning stroll. During his professional days, he had collected lot of useful items mostly gifted to him by his friends from the entire world. Kartar Singh’s two wayward sons brand him as ‘human waste’. Karam Singh also refuses to hand over the urn containing the ashes of his friend Kartar Singh to his sons. He asks them to reform themselves first and only then he would hand over the ashes to them and he holds them responsible for their death of his friend and their father; he chides them for wasting a beautiful human life. Ajit, the elder son of Kartar Singh one day finds about the cellar in the house and he is stunned by the valuable items stored inside it. He was visibly stunned to find a big tray, six cups and a kettle all of silver. The other item nearly drew the breath out of him. He held a block plane of German make, made of metal with the blade at low angle used for smoothing across the fibres of wood. The top portion of the handle was pure gold. A paper was pasted under it – ‘Gifted by a German engineering friend D. Richter, March 15, 1950.’ There was another one, a bull nose plane, wood smoothing tool, so shaped and having the blade near the front. There were drill machines, fly press of various types, then an enlarger used in photography amid other items of remarkable interest. There were items for every professional use – ranging from mechanical or civil engineering, medicine to aeronautics. Ajit Singh realizes his mistake of branding his father ‘as a waste’ who had left a invaluable treasure behind him.
